Best Time to Visit Vietnam: North vs South, Month by Month
Vietnam is 1,650 km long and the climate changes completely from north to south. The right month for your itinerary depends entirely on where you're going.
One Country, Three Climates
Vietnam spans from the subtropical north to the tropical south, and the weather is completely different in each region. There is no one "best time" — there's a best time for **where you're going**.
The Three Climate Zones
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa, Ninh Binh)
**Two seasons:** hot & humid (May–October) and cool & dry (November–April).
- **Best months:** October–December and March–April. Cool, clear skies. - **Worst months:** January–February (cold, foggy, can obscure Ha Long Bay) and May–August (35°C+ with 80% humidity). - **September:** Transition month — still hot, but the fog and rain ease.
**Sapa specific:** The rice terraces are green June–September and golden (harvest) September–October. The rest of the year they're bare.
Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue)
**Two seasons:** Dry (January–August) and wet (September–December).
- **Best months:** February–May. Sunny, warm (25-30°C), low humidity. Perfect for the beach and the old town. - **Worst months:** October–December. Typhoon season, heavy rain, flooding in Hoi An's old town. Some years have catastrophic floods. - **June–August:** Hot (35°C+) but dry. Good beach weather with a breeze.
Southern Vietnam (HCMC, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)
**Two seasons:** Dry (November–April) and wet (May–October).
- **Best months:** December–March. Warm (28-33°C), low humidity, no rain. - **Wettest months:** June–August. Daily downpours (30-45 min), otherwise fine. The delta is lush. - **November and April:** Transition months — still good, just the edges of the rains. Book last week of April for the **Reunification Day** holidays (crowded but festive).

The Two-Week Itinerary Timing
| If you're going | Best months | Avoid | |---|---|---| | North-only | Oct–Dec, Mar–Apr | Jun–Aug (rain), Jan–Feb (fog) | | North + Central | Mar–Apr | Oct–Dec (typhoon), Jun–Aug (hot) | | Full north→south | Mar–Apr, Nov–Dec | Jul–Sep (rain/phoon) | | South-only (beach) | Dec–Mar | Jun–Oct (wet) |
The Honest Truth
**March and April** are the only months where the entire country is good. This is also peak tourist season, so book 3+ months ahead. **November–February** is excellent for the south (Phu Quoc, HCMC, Mekong) and manageable for the north (cold but clear). **May–October** is the low season — cheaper, emptier — and worth it for the central coast beaches and Sapa rice terraces, despite the rain.
