Central Vietnam
A UNESCO World Heritage trading port — lantern-lit streets, riverside cafés, and tailor shops.
Hoi An is the ancient trading port of central Vietnam — a UNESCO World Heritage town preserved as it was in the 15th-19th centuries. The old town is pedestrian-only at night, lit with hundreds of silk lanterns. It's the most romantic town in Vietnam, and famous for made-to-measure tailoring and unique cuisine.
The old town is a compact grid of yellow merchant houses, Chinese assembly halls, and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge (1593). Walk the streets at dawn when they're empty, and again at night when the lanterns come on. The old town is free to enter; a ticket (about US$5) covers entry to the historic houses and museums.
Hoi An is the tailoring capital of Southeast Asia — made-to-measure suits, dresses, and shirts in 24 hours. Choose a reputable shop (Yaly Couture, A Dong Silk, Bebe) and bring reference photos. Prices start around US$50 for a suit. Allow two fittings.
Cao lau — Hoi An's signature dish of thick noodles, sliced pork, croutons, and herbs, made with water from the ancient Ba Le well. White rose dumplings (banh bao vac) and fried wontons are the other local specialties. The central market and the night food stalls on Nguyen Hoang are the best spots.
An Bang Beach (15 minutes by bike) is a lovely stretch of sand with beach bars. My Son Sanctuary (1 hour) is the Hindu temple complex of the Champa kingdom (4th-14th century) — "Vietnam's Angkor", best visited on a half-day guided tour. The rice paddies and fishing villages around the town are perfect for a bicycle loop.
Hoi An is 30 minutes from Da Nang airport. The old town floods during October–December typhoon season — check the forecast. Best time: February–May (dry, warm). The lantern festival happens every full moon.
