Southern Vietnam
Vietnam's largest island — white-sand beaches, tropical forests, and a growing luxury resort scene.
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island — a tropical escape off the southern coast with white-sand beaches, clear water, jungle interior, and the country's best fish sauce. It's the beach resort destination of Vietnam, with a growing collection of luxury resorts and a new international airport.
Long Beach (Bai Truong) on the west coast is the main strip — 20 km of white sand with resorts, beach bars, and sunset views. Sao Beach (Bai Sao) on the southeast is the postcard beach: powdery sand, turquoise water, and a calm lagoon. Ong Lang Beach on the north is quieter and more bohemian. The beaches are public and free.
Snorkeling and diving around the An Thoi islands (a day boat trip costs US$30-50). The Vinpearl Safari and VinWonders theme park for families. The pepper farms and fish sauce factories in the island interior. The night market in Duong Dong town for seafood and street food. A sunset cruise on a traditional boat.
The An Thoi archipelago (15 islands) south of Phu Quoc has the best snorkeling — coral reefs, tropical fish, and the famous "May Rut" sandbars. The Nam Du archipelago further south is more remote. Day trips from Phu Quoc's southern ports are easy to arrange.
Seafood is the star — grilled squid, steamed clams, and the famous Phu Quoc fish sauce (nuoc mam) that's considered the best in Vietnam. Bun quay (a local noodle soup) and the night market's grilled skewers are the street-food highlights.
Phu Quoc International Airport has direct flights from Hanoi, HCMC, and several Asian cities. A motorbike is the best way to explore the island (US$6-8/day). Best time: November–April (dry season, calm seas). May–October is the wet season with rougher seas.
