Ho Chi Minh City vs Hanoi: Which to Visit First?
Two Vietnams: the frenetic commerce of the south and the millennial culture of the north. Which city you visit first depends entirely on what you want from the trip.
Two Countries, One Name
Vietnam is a country of two capitals: **Hanoi**, the thousand-year-old administrative and cultural center of the north, and **Ho Chi Minh City** (Saigon), the economic engine of the south. They speak different dialects, eat different food, and have different weather patterns. Most itineraries include both, but which one first?
Hanoi: The Soul of Vietnam
**Vibe:** Old-world charm, bureaucratic pace, tree-lined boulevards, 36 streets of guild history. **Best for:** History buffs, food obsessives, photographers, people who like walking cities. **Not great for:** Nightlife seekers, beach lovers, people who need wide sidewalks.
**3-4 days minimum.** The Temple of Literature, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Old Quarter, a day trip to Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh.
**Food highlight:** Bun cha, cha ca, pho bo, egg coffee. Hanoi's food is the most refined in Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City: The Commerce
**Vibe:** Modern skyscrapers, motorbike tsunami (8 million bikes), rooftop bars, French colonial landmarks. **Best for:** History of the Vietnam War (War Remnants Museum, Cu Chi Tunnels), nightlife, shopping, day trips to the Mekong Delta. **Not great for:** Walking — the city is sprawl, you'll need Grab everywhere.
**2-3 days minimum.** War Remnants Museum, Notre-Dame Basilica, Ben Thanh Market, Cu Chi Tunnels half-day, Mekong Delta day trip.
**Food highlight:** Banh mi (the best in Vietnam), broken rice (com tam), hu tieu.
The Verdict by Traveler Type
| Traveler Type | Start in | Then go to | |---|---|---| | **First-timer (culture)** | Hanoi (north → south) | HCMC via Hoi An | | **First-timer (beach)** | HCMC (south → north) | Hanoi via Nha Trang | | **History buff** | Hanoi (war history from north) | HCMC (end at Reunification Palace) | | **Foodie** | Hanoi (best street food) | HCMC (best banh mi, tropical fruit) | | **2-week trip** | Hanoi → Hoi An → HCMC | — | | **10-day trip** | One city only — pick based on vibe | — |
The Climate Factor
- **North (Hanoi):** Oct–Apr is cool and dry (15-25°C). May–Sep is hot and humid, with occasional typhoons. - **South (HCMC):** Dry season Nov–Apr (25-35°C). Wet season May–Oct (daily downpours, 30 mins, then sun).
If you're going November–February, start in **Hanoi** (cool season) and end in HCMC (warm, dry). If you're going May–August, start in **HCMC** (dry season) and end in Hanoi (manageable heat).
The Honest Truth
Most travelers prefer **Hanoi**. HCMC is a modern Vietnamese city, not noticeably different from Bangkok or Manila. Hanoi is distinct — the lakeside morning exercise, the beer on the sidewalk, the electric energy of the Old Quarter. **If you only have time for one, make it Hanoi.**
If you have time for both, the classic route is **Hanoi → Hoi An → HCMC** over 14+ days, flying between them to save time.
